In stark contrast to the 5ths game directly before, the 4ths
were facing the then bottom of the league Bec 6. Chairman Drew had tipped
the 4ths as favourites and spirits were high. Facing them was a Bec 6
team with a mix of youth and experience. Indeed so much youth in some
cases that Ian, who has recently reduced his shaving to let him sport a fine
set of whiskers, faced off against an opponent who looked like he had yet to
start shaving.
New Boy Paul, Ian, Cat E and Lauren started in defence
whilst Steve, Cat B, Sacha and I started in attack. We threw off and
straight away started moving the ball around with pace. We missed an
early shot but things were looking good. Unfortunately Bec decided this
wasn't to be the case and took an early lead from an early attack. In
return we kept up the speed of attack but things just wouldn't drop. Our
best attempt was a shot from a quick restart that looked goal bound only for
the post to be accidently nudged and the shot to go wide. Quick as a
flash the ball shot down the other end and Bec scored. Taking it to
2-0.
That's how it remained for the rest of the half. Our
defence stayed tight reducing Bec to a minimum of shots, collecting those that
did go up and intercepting well. Down the other end, for all our
attacking endeavour, the ball just wouldn't go through the korf. So as
the whistle went and we went into a very brief half-time team talk we sat just
a couple of scores behind. Amy came on to make her debut as Sacha made
way. A great shame for Sacha who had marked her opponent out of the game
and hadn't had much of a chance to score that ever elusive first goal.
Still great to see another Supernovan make their debut and Amy took to the
court well.
The 2nd half started much as the 1st had ended with our
defence tight but our attack frustratingly just that little bit short.
Then in a short space of time we gave Bec a penalty, which they fortunately
missed, but they scored from the rebound. Then from their next attack my opponent
scored from only his 3rd shot of the game. To see two goals go in, in
such quick succession, was gutting as we'd defended stoutly for well over half
the 50 minutes and we'd looked to be making our way back into it.
Our change in attack didn't change our fortunes and again,
whilst we had the majority of shots, we couldn't score. Down the other
end Bec were missing their own fair share of shots, with each of Ian's
youthful counterparts attempts being greeted with groans from the Bec bench as
time and time again they bounced off the rim. His team mates, however,
had better luck and another couple of goals saw us change around again.
The day’s story continued and whilst we gave away another
penalty, Bec missed again, and the game ended a hugely frustrating 6-0.
This is a great shame as on another day we could have seen some of our players
walking away with hat tricks, on the other hand we can count ourselves lucky
that Bec missed their penalties and some of their shots as the score line could
equally have been worse.
Special note again to Amy for making her debut and Cat B's
first game this season. Next up SN5 play Mitcham 2 and SN4 face the
return fixture against Trojans 3 on the 9th December for out 2nd Supernova
Sunday of the season.
