After the summer tournament season, the winter season is about to start. The first training session will be on Wednesday 2nd September. Looking forward to another successful season!
We've done it! Supernova 2 have won their the last game of the season and become LKA Division 3 champions. Being in 3rd place for most of the season, SN2 stepped up a few gears winning their last 7 matches to take the title on the last day of the season. Well done to everyone who has played in SN2 this season. We've done the double!!!
With a new approach of having Supernova 1 as the development squad this year, the team initially struggled at the start of the season but have come back strongly in the second half finishing fifth this year. The team have worked and trained hard this season to come through it fitter and stronger. Onwards to next season!
After the fantastic Supernova 3 victory last Sunday, Supernova 2 have the chance to take the LKA Division 3 title with a tough home game against Mitcham 3 this sunday. Can they do it? Come down to Latchmere 3.30pm to find out!
After topping the league for most of the season, Supernova 3 have beaten Bec 5 in a tight and nervy game 7-5 to become LKA Division 4 winners! Final score was 7-5 to Supernova. Many congratulations to everyone who has played for the third team this season!
Many congratulations to Richard and Pam for the newest member of their family (now our family), Jemima Kate, born yesterday. We are fully expected that Jemima will be playing korfball at the age of 2 and snowboarding at the age of 3...
...and came back down again and again on their snowboards. A group of us took the opportunity of a break in the korfball schedule and ventured to Whistler for a snowboarding holiday. Report to follow...
SN3 braved the arctic conditions of Score leisure centre in the new Supernova away kit (the height of korfing elegance) against Highbury 4 to continue their run at the top of the division. Will they make it a Christmas number one? Watch this space...
Coach Laurie Swan married fellow Supernovan Carole in his native Australia this week. Supernova have just about forgiven the two of them for organising their wedding in the middle of korfball season and the happy couple inconveniently disappearing for most of November... Had their wedding not been such a good excuse to abandon us, more grovelling would have been required...

On behalf of the whole club, many many congratulations to Laurie and Carole!!
Supernova are please to announce Mark Paxton has accepted the post of Treasurer on the London korfball Association committee. Mark is the second member of Supernova to be elected on to the LKA committee this season along with Carole Symes.
The Committee and Coach Swan are pleased to announce that Becky Carveth will take the role of Club Captain for 2008/9. This is a new role for the club and we are sure Becky will make a great Club Captain.
So if you don't fancy discussing a korfball issue of any kind directly with Laurie as Coach or Nicola as Chair, then club captain is the one to approach.
Also Team Managers for 2008/9 have been decided upon:
Woody Ma is First Team Manager, Anna Cowen is Second Team Manager and
Mary Kitchen is Third Team Manager.
As announced at training, for the next four weeks, the Tuesday training sessions will switch to Second and Third team training. Mark Paxton will be the guest coach and he will be covering all the tactical work which has been done with the First Team squad. It is strongly recommend all non-Squad players to attend these sessions. The sessions start Tuesday, 11th November, and are from 8pm until 10pm at the Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre, directly opposite the E&C tube and rail stations.
As in true Novan style, we had a few nights out in October. If you missed them or perhaps just can't remember much of the evening, catch up with the gory details here.
Nicola, Woody, Anna and Mark's birthday bash.
Supernova goes to the dogs (literally).
Supernova are pleased to announce that Laurie Swan has been appointed coach for the coming season. Laurie has been with Supernova since it's foundation way back in 1996 and is stepping down from playing duties to take up the coaching role. He brings over 15 years korfballing experience, including stints with the Australian national team at the 2007 World Championships and the 2006 Commonwealth Championships, where he captained the team.
Training has restarted for the year and we've had a flood of new players, both brand new to korfball and experienced players, and a fresh buzz has engulfed the club. If you fancy joining us, check out the details here.
At the London korfball Association AGM on 21st July, Caz was voted in as the new London League Fixtures Secretary. This is the first time for a number of years that a Supernovan has been elected to LKA office. This year, we will also be represented at LKA level by Laurie Swan, on the Development committee and by Rob Owen on the Competitions sub-group.
Following on from Hungary, some of the more intrepid Supernovans headed off to Bosnia for sausages, beer, trains, Croatian customs officals and bomb scares. Oh, and the occasional game of full-contact korfball. All accompanied by a rather mad London marching band. It will all make sense if you read the full report. Maybe.
Late July saw 11 of us joining Zsolti in Hungary for the annual Hungarian international korfball tournament. With our team boasting widely different levels of experience, we fought hard to end up 10th in this high quality tournament. Hungarian national champions Szentendre were the eventual winners in a golden goal playoff against Dutch team NIC. For the full report click here.
We aren’t satisfied with just having korfballers play korfball, Supernova helps spread the korfball word into the corporate world as well!
For the last 9 years, Supernova has hosted the Corporate Korfball Challenge. This is an extremely successful and popular event taking place on Clapham Common during the summer months. 2008 was our most successful year so far, with even the weather being extraordinarily kind to us and despite weeks of rain prior to and post event, the day itself was gloriously sunny (in fact it was almost too good a day to play korfball!).
This year the event was held on July 15th and 24 blue chip companies battled it out for the prestigious title of Corporate Champions 2008. Hosted by Supernova, organised by Tamara Burnell, Carole Symes and Nicola Gordon, generously sponsored by Rabobank and M&G Investments and supported by korfballers across London, the victors on the big day this year were The Royal Bank of Canada, coached by Supernovan Woody Ma.
It was a an exciting tournament, with tight scores, penalty shoot-outs and a great variety of talent across all teams, many of whom were beginners and some of whom have since turned their attentions to the actual korfball world. The tournament is a much sought after event every year and is a great highlight to the corporate sporting calendar.
For more details and photos of the day itself, please see the tournament website.
This year's awards dinner was held on Saturday 14th June. After a difficult year for the club in terms of results, it was great to have a chance to reflect on the good bits and to reward the best and brightest in the Novan family...
Congratulations to all the winners!
The Supernova AGM for 2008 has ushered in a brand new committee. Your new representatives are:
Thanks also to the following for taking on important non-committee roles:
Supernova sent a team up to Manchester and came away as winners of the sweepstake, winners in the raffle and a superb 2nd in the korfball - beaten only by a tournament team of students and international players from a number of clubs. As the highest placed club team, we won a new set of shirts from local kit manufacturers Radsheep. Watch this space for news of the new look Supernova change strip!
