Supernova goes to the dogs (literally)
After a couple of "minor" incidents en route - Richard and his bike having a bit of a scrape with a car on a Tooting roundabout in his eagerness to get to the social activities for one - Novans arrived almost unscathed ready for some social action. After Nicola's slight panic at Richard's run-in with a vehicle, we paid our extortionate entrance fee of 1p (and yes folks, that includes food) and entered the arena. For those who have not been to the delight of Wimbledon Dogs, well, it is a high class venue as i am sure you can guess by the entrance fee price, with lovely plastic canteen-like attire and a smell not out of place in a chip shop. To this chip shop smell we were bound and duly sampled our magnificent 1p burger and chips. Believe it or not, the chips weren't half bad but what meat was in the burgers i am afraid i cannot say.
Gambling wise we got off to a good start when Andy won the first race of the day. As we gambled away more of our hard earned millions, Dan thought he had won the jackpot, only to be truly gutted when his dog was disqualified for "being aggressive" or something equally ridiculous. This is the dogs remember. Anyway, moving on. After that disappointment Dan was reluctant to gamble again. Nicola gambled according to the dogs who had nice names and promptly lost all of her money, some of which was kindly leant to her by Richard who trusted her gambling instincts to pick the right dog. Oooops. One horrid incident occured when mid-race, 2 dogs clashed and one suffered what looked like a broken back, leaping around with its front legs in desperation, and he was soon carried off by a concerned owner and is likely now in doggy heaven.
Beer and gambling later, the evening was drawing to a close. Laurie bet on pretty much every race going and failed miserably to win a penny. Then it was the last race. The last gasp. Many bet on the last race of the day. Nicola naturally went for some silly sounding dog, others had their tactics and Laurie went for a pot luck lucky dip needing 3 random numbers to come in 1 2 3. They were off. We shouted, we cheered, we were gutted when our own dogs failed to live up to expectations. Some dogs finished in some order we didn't notice and we all went to turn away and head home. Then Laurie belatedly realised he had won the lucky dip and he was now 80quid richer and happily went off to collect his winnings. "Drinks on Laurie" i hear you cry. Yeah right. He legged it before we saw a sniff of a beer out of that... These Aussies honestly... ;-p
Another successful Novan social, some poorer, some richer afterwards...!
