Could Supernova 2 do it too?
Somehow, one way or another, we all made it to Budapest more or less on time. In Ian's case this involved checking himself out of hospital first and Tam didn't look in much better shape as she slumbered peacefully on a bench in the bar at 9pm. Zsolti's attempts to teach the rest of us the Hungarian essentials (Sör - Beer. Bor - wine. Egesegedre! - cheers!) met with varying success - Catherine was the star pupil while at the bottom of the class Laurie was on top form with his legendary language mangling ability. Actually it turns out that Zsolti's Hungarian (or Magyar - but don't try to pronounce this without help from at least 2 native speakers) is rather good.
Zsolti also managed to find beds for everyone expect Sparky M (who insisted on staying about 50 miles away from the rest of us to get some 'Marky time'. Best not to ask). The rest of us had been anticipating a night on the floor, but thanks to the unusually high bed count in Zsolti's small flat, we all woke the next morning unexpectedly refreshed and ready to head for Gardony and the water korfball.
The weather was looking a bit dodgy when we set off, but fortunately it cheered up in the nick of time. The water was bloodcurlingly cold to get into though and various bits of Nicola "Raynaud's Syndrome" Gordon turned alarmingly blue within seconds. Still, once we were running/swimming/flailing around after the opposition, we warmed up soon enough. We lost our first game by a disappointing one goal and then got absolutely mullered in the second. Not sure whether it was our tactics, our shooting or our pathatic ineptitude in the aqueous environment (Laurie: why can't you English people move faster in the water? Carole: I don't want to get my hair wet). Personally I blame the boys, because when Nicola and Psycho were recruited to play for Zsolti's team they made it all the way to the final, scoring loads of goals in the process. As for Supenova, we fought bravely in the wooden spoon play off, but I fear we finished the day last out of the 6 teams.
We then headed for Rackeve and the main tournament, where Ian (who had spent the day recovering in Budapest) joined us for beers and late night partying. By Saturday morning it was absolutely scorching hot. Catherine, bleary eyed, blamed her lack of energy on a night in Zsolti's tent, although the rest of us were inclined to suspect the copious quantites of alcohol she consumed the previous evening.
Our first match was against Szentendre, the Hungarian national champions. Zsolti ran away so as not to have to play the first half and then gleefully informed us that about 3/4 of the opposition were in the Hungarian national team. I'd like to amaze you by saying we won, but inevitably it wasn't to be. The Hungarians took it easy in the second half so we did manage to score 7 goals.
With lots of time before our next game, we decided on a gentle stroll into the nearby town. Nicola, Rich and Catherine went for the lazy option of a lift to the train station, which then turned out not be in town at all. A 4km route march later, they finally arrived back in Rackeve just in time to dash back to the sports field for the next game.
By this time Tam had arrived from Budapest, but she managed to twist her ankle after half a game. This was good news only for the first aider, who'd been looking forward to having someone to take care of ever since the tournament began. Tam limped on, but we had a horrendous start to our game against the hosts Kanguruk, and although we pulled it back to win the second half we couldn't recover the damage and lost 10-7. Our final game of the day was the most disappointing. We had a flying start going 5-1 up in the first 10 minutes and even when NTE came back at us we hung on in there for most of the 40 minute game. But in the last minutes, they drew level and then ahead to win 11-10.
Consigned to the bottom 4 at this point, we decided we may as well make the most of the evening entertainment. Kath's Trans-Siberian Marching Band got the party started, but what really tipped most of us over the edge was ill-advised shots of Unicum and Bekerovka (don't try it at home folks. Or any where else for that matter). Laurie dancing with a mop, much inappropriate use of Psycho's hat, Ian attracting the girl of his dreams only to be cut out by a large handsome dutchman...just a few of the highlights of this eventful evening.
Next morning, blaming his lack of energy on a night in Zsolti's tent (er...recurring theme here?), Ian had to retire to bed. In his absence we had a tense game against Obuda. Yet again we managed to throw away the lead to draw 8-8 and then lost on penalties. This was the closest we came to winning a game as we completely ran out of steam in our last match, to the extent that I know we lost, but have no idea what the score was or who our opponents were. Due to a couple of defaults and retirements from other teams, we ended up 10th in the 12 team tournament, which was a bit disappointing considering that we only really felt completely outclassed in the Szentendre game. Szentendre went on to win the final on golden goal against the only other overseas team, a Dutch outfit called NIC.
Zsolti was our highest scorer (big surprise there then!), Richard was undoubtedly our most improved player (the man has turned into a complete animal in collect!) and inevitably Tam was the most injured although Nicola ran a close second, sporting the most god-awful mozzie bite I've ever seen in my life. Catherine wins the cohabitation prize - is there anyone out there she didn't share a room with?
A massive Eggy Sheggy Drey! to Zsolti and his Kangaruk team mates for looking after us so well. We'll be back - and who knows, next time we might even win a game!
The Hungary 12 were:
Laurie, Andy, Rich, Sparky Marky, Zsolti, Ian
Catherine, Nicola, Tam, Carole, Kath and Döni (we stole her from Kanguruk)
