Manchester Tournament - Supernova Scoops The Prizes

After a couple of late drop-outs, Supernova took a slightly depleted squad of JW, Zsolti, Loz, Tony, Rich M, Caz and Nicola to the Manchester tournament. This is an ultra-friendly tournament with the majority contingent of teams being student based teams from the Midlands and the North, so giving us loads of teams we don't normally get to play,

The team convened for a pub warm-up over a few beers on the Friday night at the closest hotel to the tournament - "Poshnova" don't do camping! On paper we still had a strong team, and Loz confidently predicted that we had a strong chance of winning the tournament.

Saturday morning was met by dark clouds and an extremely high chance of rain. And so it did...usually just before we were taking to the pitch! This presented a couple of problems - half the team only had trainers (some were unaware that the tournament was Outdoors....newbies take note ALL summer tournament are Outdoors!) and were destined to spend half the day sliding around. The other being that with a wet and muddy ball goals scoring might be harder than usual, as if we needed any further handicaps in that department.

But with the help of a couple of lovely Sheffield Hallam girls we went on to the pitch for the first game and quickly took the lead from one of our new recruits and added a 2nd with a converted penalty by Tony (yes, nova can score penalties!). A 3-1 lead however was squandered through a couple of defensive "slips" and so it finished a 3-3 draw. That was the only slip-up of the morning session and in the remaining games in our pool saw nova win 3-2, 3-1, 2-0 and 1-0 as the weather worsened to finish top of Pool A.

After lunch saw a quarter final win over Leeds to set-up a semi-final against the only other London team at the tournament, our good friends Highbury. After their play-off disappointment dished out a few weeks ago we were sure they would be up for revenge. At the appointed time, however, there was no sign of the north london team and we could only speculate that they were too scared to come out and were going to forfeit. The ref blew to finish the game and nova looked to go and have a rest... then Highbury decided to show up and the ref convened the match. Perhaps this was another of their tactics to delay the start of the game whilst nova stood out in the cold and wet. Of course we then managed to play really poorly and never really got started, which was problem for an already shortened game. Highbury went 1-up and the attacking division were struggling to threaten the basket. With only a few minutes remaining Zsolti made another of his leaping interceptions and passed to Tony who was a few metres from the half-way line. With his defender nowhere in sight and Loz already located at the post (as if he ever goes anywhere else) a rather optimistic attempt was made to score one from downtown. It went in and the game finished 1-all requiring penalties.

Zsolti scored the first and Highbury evened the score. There then followed several misses in a row by both teams until Loz stepped up and converted penalty no. 5 to make the score 2-1. The final Highbury player had to score to avoid defeat. So who do they send up to take the final penalty under such enormous pressure? Yes, it's the Supernova secret weapon and 1st team captain, Tamara. She did her club proud and duly missed to take Nova to the final. :o)

In the final we knew it was going to be an uphill task against a team called the Chocolatiers, a collection of the British Student Nationals. Basically they were a collection of all the best players at the tournament, ourselves excluded of course. After a few minutes of the final, we managed to take a 1-0 lead with a nice shot from Nicola, but that's as good as it got for us and whilst the game was fairly well contested we struggled to make chances in attack and the Choccers ran out 7-2 winners over the 30 minute game.

At the end of a good day on the pitch for Nova we had made the final and finished 2nd overall which was a great result for us, probably winning more games during the tournament than the 3 teams had managed all year indoors!

The success didn't stop there though.

Loz and Rich both won prizes in the raffle, but the real surprise then came in that the tournament sponsor had donated a prize of a set-of new shirts to the highest placed club at the tournament, which was us! So, Supernova walked away with a grand haul and big thanks to Manchester for putting together a damn fine tournament.
