Kingfisher 1 (16) bt Supernova 1 (2)
Well, when this fixture came through we were all somewhat gutted to have drawn Kingfisher in the first round. Being Premier League they would usually not play in the 1st round, but as they were newly promoted we were one of the lucky teams drawn against them. So to say we were expecting a thrashing is putting it mildy. Talk of how much we would lose by was heard all week. We watched Basingstoke Bulls get pretty hammered 21-1 and our dread continued.
But you know, it wasnt thaaaat bad at all and there were many positives to take away from the game...
Supernova started, ummm, as Bastingstoke had done by conceding 2 goals rapidly in the first minute or so of the game. Some of the set pieces the 1sts had practised in extra training began to show promise even if they werent entirely executed as planned. The structure was there but as usual our shooting abilites weren't. Woody tried some fakes tested in training which were almost there but not quite. Shots were going up but not in, at least for Supernova anyway, sadly the goals for Kingfisher were indeed going in. Kingfisher gave away a penalty, duly converted by Mark who was determined to get on the scoreboard, and Supernova had a reason to cheer. At halftime Novans were told we just werent running around enough and we had to inject some Usain Bolt-like speed into our game once we had a real attack on. Unfortuntely we are not all Usain Bolt (though i am sure we would all come an admirable second behind him in a race). On the plus side there was some excellent defence on show by the 1sts who have been practising front defence hard now for weeks and it is really paying off. Supernova used its full allocation of subs to give players a rest and some non squad players some valuable game time against hardcore opposition. They battled well and after another goal from Mark, at full time it was 16-2, which we felt was a respectable scoreline. Novans never gave up and i am sure learned a lot from the game...
Supernova 1 (5) bt Bastingstoke Bulls (2)
Having seen the Bulls lose to Kingfisher by less of a margain than we did, we felt we were in with a fair chance of victory in this 2nd game, despite having to play 2 matches in a row. Supernova got off to a brilliant start with 2 goals in quick succession. When the sides switched over however there was a long priod of stalemate as shots refused to go in. The practised structure was there, running in shots were attempted but failed to go in. Bastingstoke pulled one back and Rob scored a great long shot in the dying minutes of the 1st half so at half time it was 3-1
At halftime we were informed we were enjoying ourselves far too much and had to stop smiling until we were at least 10 goals up. So Novans stopped smiling as instructed and errr, never made it to 10 goals up. Oooops. Subs were again used in the 2nd half. It was a more enoyable game than the Kingfisher game and it was Supernova 1s first official win of the season. Well played Nova!
