West London 1 (9) bt Supernova 1 (4)

The first team took on old rivals West London this weekend and with old Supernovans Mirjam and David in the West London line up it was never going to be an easy match.

It was a while before we saw the first goal, but Supernova passed the ball around well and managed to put up several shots with Becky, in particular, being unlucky not to score. The Supernova defence also started well, with Sophie neutralising Mirjam and Catherine making some great interceptions. However, West London scored first and then got a second shortly afterwards to make it 2-0 to the home team. After the change of ends Woody scored a short shot from behind the post, but before we could level the score a set move from West London saw them pull away again.

With Becky's division back in attack, one of her shots finally dropped through the basket instead of bouncing out and it looked like the comeback was on before Mirjam drew a penalty at the other end, making the half time score 4-2.

Five minutes into the second half, Dan came on for Rob W in attack. For a while neither team could score and, as in the first half, it was West London who got the first two goals of the half. It didn't take long for us to claw back two goals. Rich took a strong collect allowing first Becky and then Rob O to sink long shots. Unfortunately, things then started to go West London's way as Rob O tripped fighting for the rebound allowing David to pop in a one handed shot under the basket and a runner from West London's quickest girl drew a penalty, taking the score to 8-4. In a bid to try to get a quick couple of goals back with five minutes to go, Anna C came on for Nicola in attack.

The last few minutes of the game were quite tense and it looked like West London were going to pull away further as Mirjam finally got her name on the score board. Luckily for us, though, West London missed a couple of penalties so once again we kept the opposition's goal tally to less than 10 and the final score was 9-4.

Despite the score being the same as last week, I thought this week's performance was a definite improvement. The movement of the ball in attack was more fluid and there were definitely more shots going up aided by some good collecting. There were some shots we were unlucky not to score from, but if we could improve our shooting percentage, matches like this would be well within our reach.
