Supernova 2 (11) bt Nomads 4 (9)

Supernova 2 started the new season with one of the strongest second team line-ups for a long time, featuring Anna C and Rich T who have stepped down from the firsts this year and Dan and Woody from the current squad. At the start of the match, it looked as though this strength was going to be decisive, with Woody and Anna C both scoring and Anna G opening her 2008/9 account with a long shot, quickly followed by a medium distance veering shot. Nomads managed only one goal in response until suddenly, about 10 mins out from the end of the half, the seconds switched off and allowed in 3 goals in quick succession to go to the break at 4-4.

It got momentarily worse after the break, with Nomads taking the lead, but in a repeat of the first half, unanswered goals from Woody, Anna G, Kath, Woody again and Steve put Supernova into a strong position at 9-5 up. These were mostly well worked goals, with Steve showing there’s life in the old dog yet and slotting home a clever shot stepping back out of a defended position under the post. Yet again however, the defence switched off and allowed Nomads back into it through three long and middle distance efforts.

The attack became increasingly frantic as we played more like a team one goal down than one goal up, with a series of one shot attacks, poor collects, bad shooting decisions and breakneck pace. Steve eased the pressure, scoring a long shot, only for Nomads to get back to within one goal through a running in shot. The attack managed to calm down a bit, holding onto the ball and recycling some shots, which eventually allowed Anna G to give the team some breathing space by slotting in her fourth of the game. This time there was no Nomads response, with the whistle going to make it 1 played, 2 points for the seconds. Lots of positives, with well worked goals and some great shooting, particularly from Anna G and Woody, but bearing in mind that the seconds are playing a division below where they were last season, and given the strength of the team line-up, we still have some areas to work on if we are to challenge for the title.

Toni replaced Amy at half time and quickly made her presence felt by slotting in a short one from right under the post. We then struggled a bit against an organised defence, and weren’t helped when Rich’s runner was disallowed for cutting. As the half wore on, Nomads pulled back first one goal with a running in shot and then, finally, about 90 seconds from time, the equaliser dropped in - a downtown long shot from one of the more experienced players.

Having snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat against Scorpions last week, it looked as though we were going to be on the wrong side of the equation this week – but the attacking four had other ideas. With about 60 seconds to go, Toni set herself up to collect and successfully recycled the ball three or four times while James and Andy peppered the basket. James had been sending up the long shots all game and falling just a bit short, but in the dying seconds he sent up one last ditch effort that fell straight through the middle of the basket, bringing the Supernova spectators to their feet. The full time whistle blew seconds later to give the thirds their first win of the season and leaving only one question – who will be next week’s last second hero?!
