Supernova 2 (20) bt Pelham (6)

Epsom College last Sunday.

An early Sunday morning down to Epsom Downs to Pelham started with a surprise. While we waited outside the locked sports centre we spotted 4 blokes and 4 woman seemingly engaged in an intensive warm up session on the rugby pitch. They even seemed to have a coach barking the instructions. This surely wasn’t the Pelham team we were expecting to play? Then they started doing press-ups on the rugby pitch? We got a little worried and started half-heartedly jogging on the spot. Fortunately, at this point the real Pelham team turned up with one bloke short and then wheeled out a set of old wicker baskets, much to our delight (they definitely added a few onto the scores of both teams).

The game started quickly with Anna scoring a couple of runners while Pelham’s star shooter somehow managed to score two massive long shorts from the half way line despite being double marked. Fortunately, the Rich and Rich double act shut him down and we carried on scoring regularly at the other end. Anna, Mary and the Riches played a very patient game against the short Pelham division, making good choices about when and when not to shoot. Meanwhile at the other end, Steve and Ian had the weaker defenders and took most of the shots, combining well as Alison and Kath provided excellent support and rebounded well. Ian had even remembered his shooting boots. We swapped round at half time at 10 to us and something less to them. Matt and Ella watching on the sideline told us to carry on and not let up so that we could get to 20 by the end (well Matt did at least).

Rich swapped for Andy who carried on the fine work against the short division. Mary played a great support role having drawn the short straw of getting Pelham’s best defender meaning that Anna got the shots and kept on scoring. Steve’s division scored one straight out of training last week. And towards the end Steve and Kath combined for the goal of the game: Kath passed to the side, beat her player, received a lovely flicked side feed back from Steve and finished very nicely on the run. And we ended up 20-6.

So not the most difficult game but we still had to score the goals, there were plenty of good things happening and everyone played really well.
