Scorpions (6) drew with Supernova 3 (6)
Raynes Park, 19 Oct 2008
At the end of last season, something clicked with Supernova 3 and they finished off playing some really nice korfball. So, it was a measure of trepidation that I faced this match – with so many new faces, I was expecting to have to begin again in some ways. Ha! No way. Supernova 3 was, in a word, brilliant. Collects came in, feeds came in, shots went up and the ball recycled for a new attack. Only one problem remained from last year – that basket remained as elusive as ever.
Two minutes in, Scorpions grabbed the first goal from their first long shot of the match. After that, the first half belonged to Supernova. The defence shut down Scorpions attacked to the extent that they threw the ball out of court three times in a row. Toni, in particular, picked up loads of intercepts. Up the other end, Catrin bossed the post while Lizzie fed the boys over and over. But we just couldn’t get ball into basket. Finally, after 16 minutes a pass from Andy found Rob at a nice mid-distance and he slotted home for his first in yellow and blue and chalked up Supernova’s opening goal for the season.
With the switch in ends, a couple of the older Supernova players immediately teamed up for an instant lead when Mark’s long pass found Alison alone under the post and she didn’t miss. Five minutes later Mark was fouled on a running in shot and slotted home the resulting penalty. Half time and Supernova were 3-1 up.
The second half saw Supernova make four subs whilst Scorpions quietly bought on their secret weapon, a girl that would go on to score four. In a mad ten minutes, all the good work of the first half was undone when Scorpions put in 3 unanswered goals. Alison managed to steady the team when she popped in Richard Lynch’s pass. That slowed Scorpion’s charge, but didn’t stop it. Over the next ten minutes they managed a huge long shot and a running in shot to hold a 2 goal lead with only two minutes left on the clock. They thought “game over”, but Richard Moorhouse had other ideas. Richard Lynch put up another of his super-speedy running in shots and Rich M collected and popped in one from under the post. One minute to go and the Supernova bench were in full voice. The Supernova defence intercepted and the ball came again to Rich M standing virtually on the sidelines, from where he soared in a long shot to level to scores and the Supernova cheer squad erupted. Seconds later the final whistle went and the match ended in a tie.
So, full marks for a fabulous game and a never-die attitude - everyone played so well. If we can up our shooting percentage, SN3 have a real shot at the title this year.
