Supernova 3 (4) bt Nomads 6 (3)

So, the first Supernova Sunday of the year, and it didn’t disappoint. First up was Supernova 3, playing in their second game of the season against new boys (and girls) in the league, Nomads 6. Nomads were fielding a combination of youth and experience, but unfortunately 2 of their players were stuck in traffic, so Supernova 3 got its first taste of playing against short divisions.

In the defence end, all four players worked hard, picking up interceptions and shutting down the Nomads attack. Meanwhile, up the other end, Nathalie, Jen, Rich and Rob set about the far from easy task of breaking down a defence determined to drop off and steal collects or loose balls at any opportunity. Nathalie, in her first game for Supernova, quickly showed she wasn’t afraid to get the shots up and was unlucky not to open the account early on. As time ticked by there were chances all around and with Rich getting the lions share, eventually his running in shot rolled into the basket. Nomads strengthened their attacking end as one of their delayed players arrived, but the defence still held firm, allowing Rich to slot home his second, this time a middle distance shot, to take us two up.

The change of ends saw Rob giving a masterclass in how to make yourself a nuisance to the opposition, taking every opportunity to block feeds and get on the ball line to take out attacking options. However, pretty quickly Nomads were up to full strength and Rob found himself up against a former National league player (although we didn’t tell him that until later!) Nomads landed one before the break to take it into half time at 2-1 to Supernova.

Toni replaced Amy at half time and quickly made her presence felt by slotting in a short one from right under the post. We then struggled a bit against an organised defence, and weren’t helped when Rich’s runner was disallowed for cutting. As the half wore on, Nomads pulled back first one goal with a running in shot and then, finally, about 90 seconds from time, the equaliser dropped in - a downtown long shot from one of the more experienced players.

Having snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat against Scorpions last week, it looked as though we were going to be on the wrong side of the equation this week – but the attacking four had other ideas. With about 60 seconds to go, Toni set herself up to collect and successfully recycled the ball three or four times while James and Andy peppered the basket. James had been sending up the long shots all game and falling just a bit short, but in the dying seconds he sent up one last ditch effort that fell straight through the middle of the basket, bringing the Supernova spectators to their feet. The full time whistle blew seconds later to give the thirds their first win of the season and leaving only one question – who will be next week’s last second hero?!

Team
Rob (c), Rich L (2), Nathalie, Jen
James (1), Andy, Amy (sub Toni (1)), Lorna
