Score, 23 Nov 2008
This match saw two debutants make their first appearances for Supernova. Firstly, Will found Nicola’s persuasive techniques too much to resist and agreed to spend his Sunday afternoon traipsing up to Leyton. Secondly, our brand new grey and orange away kit was evacuated from a box in Laurie and Carole’s bedroom and was unleashed on Highbury’s third team.
The first half was a low-scoring affair – all two goals of it. The good news is that Steve scored both of them, one from the penalty spot. Our defence was super-solid restricting Highbury to few clearcut opportunities. In particular, we “racked up the steals” on a regular basis – if they can’t shoot, they can’t score.
In comparison, the second half was a goalfest. First, Will found some space and unloaded a bomb from downtown for his first SN goal. His celebration was a bit understated though – almost as if he was saying “Hey…just the first of many…” However, Highbury then scored their first and we began to trade goals. Steve kept the scoreboard ticking for us but let in a couple in defence while Will scored another one. Highbury suddenly had a hot spell and suddenly the score was only 6-5 to us. Jenny and I were biting our nails on the sideline but Steve scored his fifth and Rob found a bit of space to make the game safe.
So, our third team remains unbeaten. As for our debutants – well done to Will for his two goals and solid defence. As for the kit – it didn’t fall apart and we seemed to be able to see each other so I suppose it did its job. Let’s see if it gets past Mary’s washing machine…
A couple of points worth mentioning: firstly, the referee asked me to thank our team for their sporting behaviour so well done. Secondly, thanks to Tony of Scorpions who offered to referee Steve’s commitment in Epsom; otherwise, Steve would not have been available.
