Supernova’s first team came tantalisingly close to their first win of the season as they were beaten 16-15 by Croydon in a cracking conclusion to the latest Super Sunday.

With both sides having lost all their London Regional League matches so far, something had to give and vociferous home support created an electric atmosphere as players from all four teams stayed on to cheer on their charges.

Croydon started the scoring before your correspondent equalised from distance and Ingmar put the hosts in front. Tom converted a penalty following a Croydon equaliser to put the hosts in front once again at 3-2 but it would be the last time they would lead until some 20 goals later.

Four Croydon goals from long shots followed before Rachel got her first of the afternoon with a well-taken finish before Croydon restored the three goal cushion to lead 7-4.

Supernova stepped up their efforts at this point and some excellent attacking korfball saw the girls capitalise with Sian, Eiti, and then Rachel with a runner, bringing Supernova level with half time approaching. A Croydon time out just before the break seemed to help their cause as they grabbed three in three minutes to lead 10-7 as the referee’s half-time whistle sounded.

Galvanised by Ingmar’s words at half-time, Supernova’s ladies once again led the way. First, Rachel completed a fine hat-trick before Jo scored with a lovely long shot and Sian, fresh from her starring role as Crystal Beech, made it 10-10. Each side traded blows with Tom’s second of the afternoon, Simon and then Eiti putting Supernova 13-12 in front.

Unfortunately, the same thing happened as at 3-2 as Croydon scored four goals on the bounce to lead 16-13 with 10 minutes left. Supernova fought back once again as Tom completed a hat-trick with a free pass and Sian, who had a spell of super interceptions, also grabbing her third goal.

A frantic final five minutes saw a succession of Supernova shots go up, but not in, as Croydon held out to cling on for a victory by the narrowest of margins.
